Like all students of Carson High School over the past 16 years, Honors Student Tyler Warren, since his freshman year, thought about what he would be doing for his senior project, a graduation requirement for every student who hopes to receive a diploma from CHS.

Warren’s first idea was to learn how to play bass guitar, which falls under the Personal Development aspect of the senior project. However, he realized he was not very good at guitar but then recalled overhearing another senior, Dagen Kipling, talking about his senior project, the Altruistic Endeavor category where Kipling collected clothing items for children at various Carson City schools.

This prompted Warren to choose a similar project, one in which he collected used books from multiple sources and distributed those books to children who are not able to pay for them. The final category is that of Career Exploration. Rigor, relevance, and results are the objective of the senior project, and presentations are just around the corner.

Senior Project Spotlight
For his senior project, Warren collected over 1500 books over a period of three months from anyone and everyone willing to donate to those who cannot afford to pay for them. At Fritsch Elementary School, Warren delivered around 700 donated books. Warren also gave 74 books to children through Food for Thought at Seeliger Elementary School, and he plans to donate more books to McKinney-Vento children at Mark Twain Elementary School and to the Food For Thought children next week at Freemont Elementary School. All books not taken will be donated to Fremont Elementary School. Well done, Tyler!

Polar Plunge
E
National Honor Society invites all to participate in the Polar Plunge in Lake Tahoe on March 19. That is right, it is not a mistake. Come plunge into icy cold waters of Lake Tahoe. Why? It is the biggest fundraiser to support Special Olympics of Nevada, which provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This year's theme is Rock-n-Roll, so dress up in a crazy costume and have fun. Read more at iPolarPlunge.com, find the South Lake Tahoe location, and join the Carson High School Senators’ team. You need to raise $25 to be able to plunge. Questions? See Mrs. Glenn in room 227. Let's rock this event, Senators!

Speech and Debate
CHS Speech and Debate Captain, Sawyer Barnett, competed in the state level of the American Legion Rotary competition last week and took 2nd place with his speech on duties and obligations of citizens as outlined by the Constitution. 31 members of the team compete this weekend at Bishop Manogue, wrapping up league competition. The team moves on to the state tournament in Elko as well as the rotary speaking competition in March.

AP Environmental Science
Hold on to the idea of reducing, reusing, and recycling and give green a chance because there is a new AP Environmental Science class available at CHS. Getting into the green scene will be a challenging and rewarding science course cutting across many core subjects students will study in both high school and college. This class will incorporate both local and global environmental issues while performing hands-on activities and labs. Interested? Please stop by Mr. Roseleip’s room 218, March 7th for the AP/Honors night at CHS, or talk with a counselor.

Judicial Board Elections
The Judicial Board announces the 2016-2017 Student Body Officers, and a thanks goes out to all the Student Body Candidates and to all the students who voted for their personal picks. The results are as follows: School Board Representative: Bella Bruketta; Public Relations Officer: Makayl Holloway; Historian: Mia Brozovich; Treasurer: Alek Henricksen; Secretary: Charly Lawlor; Vice President: Anya Woodbury; and next year's Student Body President: Danny Dudley! Class officer elections will be held Feb. 24-26 and will be announced next week!

Student of the Week
The student of the week is Emma Breeding. Emma is a skilled athlete for CHS playing on the tennis team and the swim team. She participates in National Honor Society, is enrolled in 3 AP and 3 honors classes, and causes anyone who knows her to feel priceless. CHS thanks Emma Breeding for her awesome academics, her killer kindnesses, and her smile that lights up Carson High School every day.

Senior Spotlight
Carson High School is proud to recognize Dagen Kipling as this week’s Senior in the Spotlight. Dagen has a cumulative GPA of 3.63 and a Weighted GPA of 4.35, and he is taking several Advance Placement classes. Dagen has been a member of the CHS swim team for the past three seasons, participating in regionals and qualifying for the Nevada state meet every year. He has also been a member of year-round swimming since the age of 11. At last year’s state meet, Dagen placed 2nd in the 200 Individual Medley and 3rd in the 500 Freestyle. This year, he plans to swim the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke.

Through age group swimming, Dagen qualified for Far Westerns, Sectionals, Futures, and Junior Nationals. Upon graduation, Dagen plans on furthering his education and swimming career at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He plans on pursuing a double major in Political Science and Philosophy and continuing on to law school. His aspiration is to become a Senator to make a difference in the world. Congratulations Dagen. Another one of Carson High School’s best and brightest.
